I have heard it almost weekly for my whole career.

“Marketing does not work.” “Strategic marketing is too expensive.” “Marketing is not effective.”

It’s been a challenge overcoming that mind-set.

What’s the Problem with Strategic Marketing?

Honestly, the same challenge occurs in a lot of different areas. For instance, consider weight loss programs. You hear the same “noise” about them: “They don’t work.” “They’re too expensive.” “They’re too hard.” “They take too long.” Etc., etc., etc.

Well, the reason you hear this about diets and exercise is also the same reason you hear it about marketing:

It’s because one size does NOT fit all.

Have you noticed how many diet related products and systems are available? Do you think if one worked for everyone there would be this many?

Have you noticed how many marketing products and systems are available? Do you think if one worked for every business there would be this many?

Overcome the Challenges

With this in mind, there will be challenges. Often times you will try diets that don’t work for you. It’s because you are unique. Same with marketing. Trying various marketing products and tactics on your own is no different.

OK, now what’s the solution?

By reading various diet-related blogs and books over the years, it has occurred to me that the ones that most successfully and consistently help people lose weight are the ones that first help people understand what they need to know about themselves.

Diets only work for people when they work for people. That sounds redundant, but it’s true. For example, if I have to eat a grapefruit every morning on a diet, but I HATE grapefruit, will the diet work for me? Absolutely not!

And if I hate vigorous exercise, will a diet plan that includes 3 hours per week at a gym work for me? That’s a big, fat NO!

So, the key is to understand this and find something that works for your unique personality. You must either work with someone who has weight-loss expertise and can help you find what works for you, or find an expert who can educate you on how to learn it yourself.

Strategic marketing works the same way.
